As humans connected to our environment there are several ways to experience our world throughout different interactions.
#1_ What to improve?
The first step to start your relationship with technology it is to recognise how you would like to enhance your interaction with the environment.
>Abilities: Extending your body capabilities to express and interact with the environment. For example: an exoskeleton and a bionic arm or a leg.
> Cognitively: Extending the way you absorb and process information that is surrounding you, for example through a bracelet counting how many steps you walk by day.
> Senses: Extending the way you perceive your environment and the behaviour of your brain. For example, to be able to see at night, feel the earth's magnetic pole and improve our direction sense.
#2_ Where to be inspired?
In order to recognise what senses you want to improve, you can look at nature and the ways animals sense things and their abilities or be inspired by technology and what kind of new perceptions are possible to have with technology today.
- Plants absorb energy from the sun.
- Bats can use echolocation.
- Sneaks see infrared.
- Elephants can communicate with infrasound.
- Connecting to the internet to receive any kind of interaction such as communication or information.
- Making a sensorial lab that monitores things chemically, as blood pressure and composition.
- Using a sensor to feel radio signals or electricity.
There are several possibilities that can be explored.
#3_ What kind of technology is being developed today?
Here are some examples of technologies being developed today.
After you have defined which kind of ability, sense or cognitive aspect you want to enhance it's important to connect to the right people to in other to develop the proper technology.
> Technicians: People already involved in researching the technology you are looking for. You can find some references in our database.
> Doctors and psychologists: It is always wise to have a professional’s opinion to helps you and advise you during your transition.
> Other cyborgs: Here you can connect to our facebook community. A place where you can exchange experiences, tips and advice with other fellow cyborgs.
5_ Prototyping wearables
> Defining Concept: Once you have build your network, and made your research it's time to connect all parts and start thinking about how to prototype your device. Think about what possibilities you would like this device to provide you, that can help you plan your prototyping plan. Your proposition might be an artefact that already existed and has being tested. In this case, you can find some at the Cyborg Nest (Add link)
> Building the prototype: All checked and defined, now it's time to build a wearable prototype to test the concepts and improve the technology at the same time that you adapt to this new input.
TRANSFORMING YOUR BODY AND YOUR PERCEPTIONS
Once the technology has been tested and you have interacted and adapted to it, the next step is to think about how to make it implantable.
6_ Adapting and implanting technology
> Implanting: Together with doctors and technicians the plan is to test material and technology components to implant the artefact at your body. The materials used for the wearable prototype might not be proper for implant, and also you should think about water resistance if your implant will need to be charges, if so, how will you do that?
> Adapting: The adaptation phase to the constant changing in your body and the inputs to your brain from this new device, might be challenging. Because of this, it's important to have a team to give you a support during the process. Keep in mind your brain is a brilliant machine, and it will adapt, so let it take it’s time.
>Evolve: Technology is always evolving, and now that you have become technology why shouldn’t you evolve as well? Think about improvements you could do to your implant or about new ways to use it. Keep in mind that as time goes by your new senses will become more natural and more precise since your brain will be constantly improving with it.
